RELI 130: Christian Tradition
As you conduct a pilgrimage journey around campus, write your responses to the questions in this “journal” below. I will try to catch up with you.
If you need me, my cell # is ###-###-####
No matter how far you’ve progressed, meet in the courtyard of WPC (the courtyard inside, in the middle of the building) no later than 11:15.
1. Go to one of the painted graffiti rocks on campus.
- As you are walking there, think about what Egeria and Gregory had to say about these questions:
- Why did people make pilgrimages?
- What did they do physically, and what did they hope to accomplish physically and spiritually?
- When you get there, discuss Egeria’s and Gregory’s answers to these questions with one other person; take notes here.
- How did ancient pilgrims like Egeria leave their mark on a place? How do they take some of that place home with them?
- Why do YOU visit places that are special? What do you do there? What is the difference between the kind of travel you do and the kind of travel Egeria and Gregory are talking abou
2. Go to the part of campus whose architectural elements most closely resemble the ruins of an ancient Greek or Roman site.
- Analyze a passage from Egeria’s journal where she describes visiting a particular physical space or monument. What meaning does she derive from visiting that place? What meaning does she give that place, and how does she imbue that place with meaning? How does she know the legend of that space? Be sure to write the page number and name of the space/monument below when you write your reflection.
- Do you know the legend of this site on campus? Do you know the ritual practices modern people conduct at this site? If so, do them!
3. Visit the GHES Center (Gender studies, Humanities, and Ethnic Studies Center).
- Why does Gregory think pilgrimages are a bad idea? Why are they especially problematic for women?
- What would Egeria’s response to Gregory be? Can you craft a response that draws on Egeria’s personal experience and intellectual/religious beliefs?
- Can all Christians, and especially all Christian women, do what Egeria did? Why/why not?
