Unfinished statuette of Akhenaten kneeling

try another

The sculptor has painted black lines showing where to carve more deeply to shape the legs and head of the kneeling king. He might have finished the statue himself or passed it on to an assistant.

The rounded limbs and body are fully finished here. The black lines visible in the kilt are not marks for further carving, but traces of a final paint job, done after polishing with abrasive sand. Egyptian sculptors often left a figure attached to a back pillar, saving work and making the statue more durable.
