For centuries, the sun god, Ra, had been one of Egypt's major deities, known in many forms. Akhenaten's father, Amenhotep III, began to place special emphasis on the worship of Aten, the light within the sun's disk. Shown here as he kneels to make an offering, Amenhotep III wears a special collar, armbands, and an apron featuring multiple uraei, cobras crowned with sun disks, all elements that link him to the sun.
