Tutankhamen wearing a blue crown

Reign of Tutankhamen, 1332 - 1322 B.C.
Indurated limestone; h. 15.2 cm, w. 23 cm
Rogers Fund, 1950.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

This portrait's round, cherubic face recalls images of the royal family late in the Amarna Period. The head probably comes from a statue representing the young king with a much larger figure of the god Amen, whose hand is atop the king's crown. The god's outstretched hand sets the crown on the king's head in a symbolic gesture of coronation.
