Maya and Meryt

Saqqara
Reign of Horemheb, 1319 - 1292 B.C.
Limestone; h. 158 cm, w. 90 cm, d. 120 cm
Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden

As Overseer of the Treasury and Director of Works, Maya supervised the repair of Egypt's temples and was responsible for the burial of Tutankhamen. Maya's own tomb was one of the largest at Saqqara. This statue from that tomb, one of the finest sculptures of this period, depicts the deceased and his wife Meryt with a mixture of the restrained naturalism of the post-Amarna style and a new monumentality.
