Youthful Nefertiti

Amarna, house P.47.2
Reign of Akhenaten, 1353 - 1336 B.C.
Quartzite; h. 30 cm, w. 14.8 cm, d. 18 cm
Agyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, Berlin

Nefertiti, whose name means "The beautiful one is come," was Akhenaten's principal wife. She played a major role in his new religious practices and in affairs of state. This graceful, almost-finished portrait is the work of a master sculptor. Black lines on the ears, forehead, and neck are guides for further carving. The projection at the top would have supported the queen's tall, blue crown.
